There are many amongst us who are doing selfless services for the welfare of the under-privileged and the marginalised in the society. They provide solace, encouragement and train them to face life with dignity. Their activities empower the weak and provide opportunity to escape the clutches of poverty and alleviate their sufferings.

The award is given to inspire people to do selfless service to the society for the needy and poor. The award is for excellence in human endeavour in the field of Community and Social Service.

The activities of the nominee may include the following:

• Supply of pure drinking water, initiation and improvement in sanitary facilities, low cost balanced diet.
• Improvement in village roads, transport and communication systems
• Rehabilitation of vulnerable children, work in slums.
• Free or low cost legal aid to women in distress, creating general awareness among women about their rights and the laws pertaining thereto, reforms for enhancing the social status of women.
• Care, education and rehabilitation of the mentally retarded and the physically challenged (including spastics, slow learners) and dyslexic children and so on.
• Adult Education
• Rehabilitation of persons afflicted by leprosy
• Dalit and Tribal Welfare
• Health, Hygiene and Sanitation
• Removal of Untouchability
• Rural Development
• Any other activity done for the general welfare of masses.

The Award seeks to honour such individuals and institutions and bring to light their services so that many others can emulate them. To recognize and express our gratitude, the Awards honour the services of such persons with a cash award of Rs.10 lakhs, a citation and a momento.
