The award is given to inspire people to do selfless service in the field of Medicine and Health Care for the welfare of the needy and poor in the society. The award is for excellence in human endeavour in the field of Medicine.

The activities of the nominee may include the following:

  • Demonstrated altruism and compassion while providing quality health care to a destitute, distressed or marginalized population in an impoverished community.
  • Demonstrates productive improvement towards medicine.
  • Contributing and working to ensure better healthcare for India's rural population.
  • An individual or institution who is not a qualified medical professional but is contributing towards better health for rural India. He/she could be contributing to spreading awareness or be actively involved in creating better healthcare infrastructure.
  • Focusing on providing health & hygiene betterment services.
  • Free or low cost medical care facilities for women and children, pre-natal and post-natal care, education for better health and hygiene, better nutrition for children.
  • Non-profit medical institutions serving the society
  • Persons involved in setting up of the institutions
